A Wedding Mc Experience
I am a high school educator (18 years). I have done improv comedy professionally for 20 years. I have MC’d friends and relatives weddings 1, 2, 3 … several times.
I MC’d my comedy partner’s wedding. I MC’d my cousin’s wedding. I MC’d my sister’s weddings - both times.
I MC’d a wedding professionally once. Mark and I were paid to MC a young couple’s wedding and do a half hour show during the reception. (We have performed at a few weddings by the way). What does that cost? The father of the bride covered our transportation and room, and paid 3 grand. Wow.
Here is what I learned. Your sense of humour will be received only as well as it can be by the audience. Here is an example to show you what I mean.
My cousin’s wedding was a rural affair. Most of the crowd was involved in farming or blue collar work. Some of my favorite jokes were ineffective. Other jokes I used because they suited the people at the head table (a topic discussed in The Wedding MC Jokebook) were much more successful.
I introduced the father of the bride by telling an old joke about a bull who isn’t doing his job. The vet brings out some impotence medication. When the vet sees the farmer a couple of weeks later he asks how the bull is doing on the new medicine. The farmer responds he’s not sure. The vet asks if the medicine is working. The farmer says sure, and it tastes like chocolate. Now that joke is old. Old as the hills. But it suited the crowd. It received a big laugh and made the rest of the reception a more comfortable affair.
Remember to assess the type of crowd you will be speaking to when you are the wedding MC. Most of the speakers at the wedding will not require adjustments because their topics are defined - toast to the groom. They won’t be able to adjust anyway. But as the Wedding MC you can anticipate the audience and make it easier for everyone speaking, and the audience themselves, if you can make a few key selections in the humor you use.
This concept is covered in The Wedding MC Jokebook.
